General FAQs

At AutismCare, we understand how important it is for families to access timely, respectful support.

We aim to complete the initial pre-assessment consultation within one week of your first contact. From there, our full three-step process; comprising consultation, assessment, and feedback, is typically completed within 8 to 10 weeks for children, and 4-6 weeks for adults, depending on individual needs and availability.

We are committed to offering timely access without compromising depth, care, or connection. Our process is guided by your child’s pace and comfort, and we take the time needed to understand each individual’s unique profile in a thoughtful and affirming way.

At AutismCare, we’ve designed our service to remove unnecessary delays while maintaining a comprehensive, respectful, and identity-affirming process. Families and individuals are often faced with long waiting lists and complex referral pathways within traditional systems, barriers that can prolong stress and delay access to meaningful support.

Our model offers direct access to experienced psychologists and a carefully structured, three-step assessment process. We aim to conduct the initial pre-assessment consultation within one week of first contact. From there, the full process, including consultation, assessment sessions, and feedback, is typically completed within 4 to 6 weeks of the initial consultation, depending on individual needs and scheduling.

This approach allows us to provide timely, high-quality assessments while still ensuring the depth, care, and collaboration that are central to our neuroaffirmative ethos. We work closely with each individual and family to ensure the process is not rushed, but responsive to the person’s pace and comfort.

Yes. All the psychologists our platform connects you with are professionally qualified and registered with the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI).

As a result, your diagnosis is recognised within the Irish health and social care systems, providing access to relevant support services.

Yes. All of the psychologists our platform connects you with are professionally qualified and registered with the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI).

Yes. An online Autism assessment is fully recognised and holds the same validity as an in-person assessment.

At AutismCare, our online assessments are carried out in line with current best practice guidelines. This format offers increased accessibility and flexibility, particularly for individuals who may experience barriers to in-person appointments or prefer to engage from the comfort of their own environment.

Whether the assessment is conducted online or in person, the outcome is equally valid and can be used to access services through the HSE, Department of Education, and other public or private support systems.

We ensure that the online experience remains thorough, respectful, and neuroaffirmative, and is adapted to meet individual support needs.

No referral is required to begin the process at AutismCare.

We begin with a pre-assessment consultation, where you’ll meet directly with one of our qualified psychologists. This session provides an opportunity to explore your concerns, ask questions, and discuss your or your child’s experiences in a supportive, neuroaffirmative space.

Following this consultation, the psychologist will offer a formal recommendation on whether proceeding to a full Autism assessment is appropriate at this time. This approach ensures that every step of the process is individualised, collaborative, and grounded in respect for neurodivergent identities.

You can contact us directly to begin, we’re here to support you from the very first step.

At AutismCare, we offer a comprehensive, neuroaffirmative assessment process that includes consultation, assessment sessions, and a detailed feedback report with personalised recommendations.

We understand that funding an assessment can be a significant decision for many families and individuals. To support accessibility, payment plans are available for both adult and child assessments.

If you have any questions about pricing or would like to discuss payment options, our team is happy to guide you through the available supports.

Many individuals and families choose to seek an Autism assessment, to gain a clearer understanding of how they or their child experience the world. For many, the assessment process can be a validating step in recognising identity, accessing meaningful support, and navigating systems with greater clarity and confidence.

At AutismCare, our neuroaffirmative assessment process is about creating a fuller picture of a person’s identity, culture, communication style, sensory profile, emotional needs, and ways of connecting. This can help individuals, families, and educators better understand what is supportive, what is overwhelming, and how to create environments that feel safe and affirming.

A formal diagnosis/identification can also provide access to important accommodations, educational supports, workplace protections, and therapeutic resources, depending on individual needs and contexts. But most importantly, it can offer language, understanding, and validation, especially for those who have spent years feeling different, unsupported, or misunderstood.

Choosing to pursue an assessment is deeply personal, and we are here to support you in making that decision in a way that aligns with your values, needs, and goals.

Disability Allowance is a weekly social welfare payment from the Department of Social Protection for individuals aged 16 or over who have a disability that substantially restricts their ability to take part in work that would otherwise be suitable for someone of their age, experience, and qualifications.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference, not a mental illness or cognitive impairment. However, the world is not always built to accommodate neurodivergent ways of thinking, communicating, and engaging. This can lead to significant barriers in education, employment, and independent living, which may mean that some Autistic individuals meet the criteria for Disability Allowance.

For up-to-date information on eligibility criteria, how to apply, and what documentation is required, you can visit the Citizens Information website:
http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social-welfare/social-welfare-payments/people-with-disabilities/disability-allowance.

Autism is a natural and lifelong neurodevelopmental difference. Autistic people experience, process, and respond to the world in ways that may differ from what is expected in neurotypical culture, but these differences are not deficits. Autism is a form of neurodivergence. Autistic identity is valid, meaningful, and deeply woven into how a person thinks, feels, moves, communicates, and connects.

Rather than being a set of problems to fix, Autism represents a diverse way of being human. Autistic people may have unique strengths in areas such as deep focus, pattern recognition, creative thinking, and sensory awareness. Many Autistic individuals also communicate in ways that are more direct, visual, or nonspeaking, and may engage with the world through stimming, routine, or focused interests, each of which holds purpose and meaning.

Autistic people are part of a rich and growing culture with shared language, community, and advocacy. Like all individuals, Autistic people thrive when their environment is respectful, accessible, and affirming.

At AutismCare, we honour Autism as a valid neurotype, not something to be pathologised. We are here to support Autistic individuals and their families in celebrating difference, understanding sensory and communication needs, and building lives grounded in self-trust and belonging.

At AutismCare, we aim to make the payment process as transparent and manageable as possible for families and individuals.

The initial pre-assessment payment is taken at the time of booking your pre-assessment consultation.

If you choose to proceed with a full assessment, the remaining payments are then made in two further stages, prior to your main assessment session and before your feedback and report session with your psychologist.

We also offer flexible payment plans to support accessibility. If you have any questions about payment options or would like to discuss a plan that works for you, our team is here to help.

Yes. Following your assessment, you will receive a comprehensive, professionally prepared report from your designated psychologist. This report is written with care and precision and can be used to help request reasonable accommodations, access learning supports, or secure workplace adjustments that reflect your needs and strengths as a neurodivergent individual.

In addition to the report, we are happy to provide supporting letters – free of charge—should you require them for employers, education providers, or support services.

At AutismCare, we are committed to empowering individuals to advocate for themselves in educational and professional settings, with documentation that is clear, respectful, and fully aligned with best practice and neuroaffirmative values.

At AutismCare, we offer flexible assessment options designed to meet the needs of both individuals and families in a way that is accessible and supportive.

Adult Autism assessments are completed entirely online, allowing individuals to engage in the process from a familiar and comfortable environment.

Child Autism assessments are conducted using a hybrid model:

  • Parent and caregiver interviews are held online, offering flexibility and ease of access.
  • The child’s in-person assessment takes place at our welcoming clinic in Rathfarnham, County Dublin, where we create a calm, supportive space that respects each child’s sensory and communication needs.

This structure allows us to provide high-quality, neuroaffirmative assessments while reducing unnecessary travel and ensuring the process is guided by comfort, consent, and connection.

If you have private insurance, we can provide all the necessary details for you to attempt to claim on your insurance.

For claims, when choosing your psychologist, you will likely be required to choose a psychologist based in your country of residence.

Information about each psychologist will be given to you at the time of booking.

Note: This is not definitive or comprehensive advice on how to claim via your insurance, please check with your insurance provider regarding your specific ability to claim before booking.

If you have any further questions or would like more information about our services, you’re very welcome to get in touch with us directly.
You can reach us by email at info@autismcare.ie and a member of our team will be happy to support you. Whether you’re seeking clarity about the assessment process, wondering about next steps, or simply want to talk things through—we’re here to help.
